A highly unusual pair of cast iron models of recumbent lions, after the Canova model known as the sleeping and vigilant Lions. Antonio Canova carved the original Carrara marble pair of lions as guardians to the tomb of Pope Clement XIII at St. Peter's, Rome. He completed them in 1792. The  awake lion is thought to represent the energetic work of the Pope while the sleeping one symbolises his moderation.

To fashion these two sculptures in cast iron is a remarkable achievement. The detail of the casting and their fine bronze patina speak of an aspiration to show that this material of bridges and pipes can be employed in an exquisite way. A triumph of art over materials.
